Model agency, requirements, castings and jobs

If you want to work internationally as a model, you need to meet special requirements when it comes to height, weight and later diligence, self-confidence and trust.

You can learn a lot before your first model application. Why? There is a lot of competition among young models, especially between the ages of 15 and 22. The better prepared you are, the better you will perform at castings and jobs.

We have written this XXL guide to give you a free, comprehensive overview of how to become a model.

The first step: Overview

Let’s start step by step and with an overview.

Now a first, very, very quick overview. What does it mean to become a model? What can young models expect? What do you need to bring to the table as a model?

Ask yourself this question:

Do you really want to be a model?

Reality Check – As a“New Faces” (new model) you don’t start out on the cover of big magazines like Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar. Whether you’re a supermodel in the 90s or now in your 20s with Instagram and TikTok, building your career takes time and 95% depends on you (self-confidence, hard work, ambition, motivation, … but more on that later).

If you want to get jobs in showrooms, in commercials and on the catwalk of a fashion show, it takes a lot more than “good looks”. After all, you are a young business woman or business man. While others your age have a relaxed life, you already have your first appointments, trips, and if everything goes well and your modeling agency builds up trust in you, you may be flying to Milan or Paris for the first 14 days during the autumn vacations. You see, modeling is more than just “good looks”.

The first important question is:

Do you really want to be a model?

The road to becoming a model is long and takes a lot of patience. Becoming a model means that you want to do photo shoots, even if they take 9 or 10 hours and you have to present 30 different outfits, with facial expressions and gestures. The path from the first casting at the model agency, the introduction to the networks of advertising photographers and advertising agencies, the first test shoots with renowned photographers, the first small jobs, feedback from the agency. The more castings and jobs you do, the better our clients and brands get to know you. If you’ve done a good job, you’ll get follow-up bookings – perfect! This means that the clients were satisfied with your performance and would like to work with you again. This is how we build your career as a model step by step.

Modeling at 15, 16, 17: School

School & good grades – becoming a model and being a model is work and a real job! Your goal is to be working well by the time you’re 20 or 21, i.e. in 3, 4 or 5 years. The longer you are at it, the higher your wages will be. At some point, you’ll get jobs where you earn as much in one day as others earn in a whole year. The way to get there requires patience.

Until you graduate, it’s all about good grades and your education. Very important: your education. Why? You will meet many interesting people with big goals, you will encounter many languages, international photographers, casting directors and models. The more you know, the better. The school actually gives you all the important basics. That’s why our modeling agency puts a big focus on making your school a priority for you until you graduate.

Model portfolio: Structure and photographer selection

Throughout your career, our management will focus on one thing: your model portfolio. The better your model book, the higher your fee. The important thing is: quality before quantity. This means that your model portfolio should contain “only” 10 photos from 5 excellent shoots with top photographers instead of 100 photos from 50 shoots.

The more exclusive, the higher your fee can be.

As management, we also work to ensure that your book reflects you as naturally as possible. Naturalness generally plays a very important role, even with advertising agencies, fashion brands, etc., who ultimately book you for jobs and campaigns. For example, almost 80, 90% of decisions are made on the basis of Polaroids. Polaroids are absolutely natural shots of models, without styling, make-up, etc.

Your first shoots, castings and jobs

After the first good test shoots with photographers to build up your model portfolio, you have a solid foundation. Now we will put you forward for your first castings and jobs. Small jobs at first, for example for online stores or social media shoots. Once your first test shoots have gone smoothly and now your first jobs, you will gradually be put forward for larger jobs and campaigns (depending on how old you are).

Here’s a reminder: you need good grades to be able to take time off during the week. The better you do at school, the more likely it is that your school teachers will give you time off for these appointments. Good grades will help you even more, for example if your journey continues after graduation. At an international fashion show, a photo shoot in London or a video shoot with an international team in Berlin, you will constantly meet interesting people and learn new languages. You need to be fit for small talk and for your job itself.

Many people dream of being a top model. The dream of traveling the world, meeting interesting people and having good jobs for well-known companies and brands. Particularly in the modeling industry, the rise can be very fast. If you have international dimensions and that certain something as a model, you can get to know the world from Berlin to Cape Town. As in professional sport, careers start very early. New trends are constantly emerging in the media world, which are quickly spread by many.

Mental requirements for models and new faces

In addition to the physical requirements for models, such as their measurements, the mental requirements and character of a model also count. A model must always demonstrate strength, discipline and stamina. Jobs are often strenuous and time-consuming. Tiredness or stress must not be noticeable in a good model. Motivation and ambition characterize an experienced model for clients and model agencies. Agencies and clients like to book models with these qualities again.

Recurring bookings are very important for you as a model and for the model agency. In addition, a healthy self-confidence and the versatility of a model are decisive selection criteria. As a model, you will be competing with twenty, fifty or a hundred models in castings for jobs. For e-castings, there are sometimes more than one hundred models. If you are diligent and make it to the fashion capitals of Europe, America and Asia, you will be sent from casting to casting every day. If everything goes well, from fashion show to fashion show and from photo shoot to photo shoot. This requires a lot of self-confidence and energy from you! This overall package of measurements, appearance, motivation and ambition creates the charisma of a model.

Model requirements: women, men, weight and height

The requirements for models are very different. The more international the agency, the narrower the scope for measurements. Especially in modeling agencies, the requirements are very high. It all comes down to a few centimeters. Female models should look for a slim figure, beautiful skin, teeth, hair, every detail. For men, the criteria are just a little simpler. Reputable and good model agencies

The route via a reputable model agency or a model agent or model booker is always the best for you. This route has established itself. A model agency will make sure that your career goes well. Right from the start, they will make sure that you get good contacts with photographers and the opportunity for good test shoots, ideally magazine publications. In the first few months, it’s often tempting for models to do lots of photo shoots with lots of photographers. Really? With tips and recommendations from your model management, you will have a good selection of photographers and a good overview of the industry right from the start. They will also explain to you what you need to look out for, not only in shoots, but also when traveling or with clients.

Model managers take you further.

Model managers help you with good contacts. Whether it’s photographers, as just mentioned, or the first fashion show. Here everything revolves around the Fashion Weeks. What do I have to do if I want to become a model?

First of all, you need to look at the requirements to realistically assess whether you can work as a model and get jobs. As a new face, your height is particularly important. The two most frequently asked questions are “how tall do you have to be to be a catwalk model?” and “how tall does a male model have to be?” There are different requirements for different jobs. For women, this means 178-180 cm; men should be around 10 cm taller. In advertising, it is more relaxed, both in terms of height and proportions.

How much do you earn as a normal model?

How much money a model earns depends on the individual path, the requirements and the clients. However, it takes a few years before you can make a living from modeling, especially if you start at the age of 15 or 16. It usually takes another 1 or 2 years until you finish school and then the international build-up begins, which takes another 1 or 2 years. My greatest learnings in marketing

Marketing is all about supporting customers in their strategic but also operative work in the media. All this with the big goal of reaching the right target group. Here I was able to gain my first insight. Planning, organizing but also being creative was a lot of fun.

The practical work is all about publishing! Creativity is required in all areas, whether it is the classic placement of advertisements, blog posts, posts by influencers or creative content for the social media account. There is no limit to your imagination and you can let your creativity run wild. Apart from that, it is also extremely important to work in a structured way and to be in constant communication with the client in order to coordinate my plans and ideas. This makes the exchange via e-mail, but also telephone calls or meetings particularly important.

What’s it about? Internship in a marketing agency

A marketing agency attracts clients from very different industries. Right from the start, we coordinate where the goal of the respective brand lies. Are there more visitors on the website? Should the turnover be increased? Should a certain number of followers be reached?

Each different goal, each customer needs his own strategy, his own concept and his own approach.

It is also important that not only the goal is defined correctly but also the target group. When defining the target group, it quickly becomes clear on which medium should publish and which is not particularly suitable. To address a target group of 40-55 year olds, for example, you won’t find your voice heard on TikTok as on Facebook.

My internship: Model Agency, Content Marketing and Fashion Magazine

Not only do you learn a lot about marketing and social media, you also get extremely deep insights into search engine optimization. Depending on the focus of your internship, you can also get small insights into model booking, consulting and project management.

An internship at CM Models is very versatile, because CM Models is much more than just a model agency. CM Models has an exclusive fashion magazine, FIV Magazine, as well as its own Social Media Agency.

Creative teamwork and independent work

Through the different sections (models, magazine, social media) you get an amazing amount of insights into very different areas of the media world. Starting with research up to the independent conception and publication of articles. But you will also learn how to use the most important software. For example with Photoshop to create graphics. You’ll learn how to do website analytics, evaluate customers and devise new strategies, and create creative content for social media.

There’s something for everyone here and it’s very important that every intern can take valuable content with them. Although this is an internship, working independently is essential. It’s not just about working through the work, but about your creativity, your input and diligence.

6 months internship: Procedure

During my six-month internship at CM Models, I got to know an incredible number of different topics. I started by interviewing influencers for the fashion magazine. I learned so much in my first week: how to contact influencers, how to communicate with management, how to research the influencer and how to create the questionnaire. This was the perfect start for me. I learned how to write e-mails, keep in touch and communicate with management. I was shown how to approach the research so that I still stay within the time frame and get feedback on the questions. As soon as I had the first interviews back, I was shown directly how to embed everything in WordPress and create my own articles. Afterwards I was able to gain my first Photoshop experience when I created the article images. Et voilá – my first articles were already published. At that time it was very exciting when my articles were published, today it is part of my everyday life! It is nice to be heard and to live out your creativity. Gradually, different areas of responsibility were added, but content marketing is always in focus. After my six-month internship I was even taken on and have been working for CM for over 2 years now!

Here’s a quick explanation in the Model Wiki: Choreography is an essential part of fashion shows and presentations, for example at customer showrooms for major fashion brands. It refers to the planned movements, steps and positions that models perform on the catwalk in order to present the clothes in the best possible way. The choreographer is the person who designs and coordinates these movements.

Why a choreography?

At a fashion show, but also in showrooms, 5 to 20 models come together. The processes have to be precisely planned, after all, customers are there as guests to whom the fashion is presented.

Social media strategy and guidelines

For a social media agency, the first step is always to develop a strategy. Such a strategy is relatively long, after all, such a community is not a day care.

The selection of the right social networks, content and postings, time periods, the response to messages, all this must be planned. For this purpose, social media agencies develop a social media concept in cooperation with their customers, which is then implemented step by step.

This strategy is then used to develop guidelines that all employees, freelancers and other agencies adhere to. One of the core pieces of this strategy is the editorial plan.

An editorial plan summarizes the various activities and employees in a clear paper. This can be a simple table or also a tool with which the publications are planned.

The editorial plan contains all activities and topics. Employees of the company will find here tasks that they should do in preparation, for the social media agency. E.g. send new products, so that photos and videos can be made, which are then published in the social networks, the employees of the social media agency find here again everything important, from the preparations of the postings to the publication periods to the topics that will be published in the coming week, next month and so on.

Write and publish articles

Through the editorial plan, all posts that need to be written and published are planned. Social media agencies then take over the postings in the individual social networks for their customers and, of course, the interaction that occurs among the postings.

Regular publication is essential, and social media agencies pay attention to this. Their customers are busy with their daily business. Today, when many orders come in or an employee is down, no social media posting is made. At some point, the social media channel stops working and the community stops growing. That’s the biggest danger, without a social media agency!

As simple as it sounds, writing and publishing posts on a regular basis is so important that it needs to be mentioned!

In addition, of course, the social media agency staff considers not only that something should be published, but also when and how. Do we use galleries, a single photo, videos, story function, what does the description under the post look like? Do we use emojis, do we use a link, do we write very little or do we write a lot. All this needs to be planned for every single post!

This is where the editorial plan comes into play again, especially if several social networks are used. Through joint coordination in the editorial plan, a video can be published on YouTube at 9 a.m., a reminder on Instagram at 10 a.m. and the first reaction on TikTok at 11 a.m., for example.

Community management and communication

The strategy is made. The editorial plan created. The posts written and published.

The next important, central task of a social media agency is community management and communication. On the one hand, these are the interactions directly under the posts. On the other hand, of course, direct messages that arrive in the inbox. But it’s also about external communication, how do people talk about the brand on other profiles, channels or pages?

In addition, a good social media agency ideally also brings a lot of small ideas! How can you bring the community together? A small tool would be to collect feedback, what do you think about that? Sweepstakes are a possibility or “come together events” in larger cities.

So community management encompasses communication on the one hand, but also entertainment.

Test new functions / platforms

Social media apps are evolving so fast! Just 15 years ago there was only Facebook, then at least YouTube, Instagram, now Pinterest, Twitch, TikTok… So social media agencies also have to be constantly on the lookout for new trends and new social media apps that might be interesting for their clients.

For one thing, important, new features that are constantly popping up within social apps. TikTok does something new, Instagram copies it, Facebook has an idea, a new filter is introduced… new is always interesting, because there are few people who have published content about it yet.

Then there are the new social networks, usually they start with a special aspect, they are for gamers, on TikTok you could sing to real songs of the stars. The one who finds the right app here and is there at the beginning has good chances for high growth.

Crisis communication (recognizing and managing shitstorms)

The greater the awareness, the larger the community, the more diverse the opinions. Of course, this also increases the risk of shitstorms and negative comments.

Crisis communication is also one of the tasks of a social media agency. Ideally, of course, this should be taken into account in the social media strategy at the outset. In the worst case, i.e. no planning and the shitstorm is already there, it must at least react immediately.

Such a shitstorm can happen to any good company. For example, when a person with a larger reach (influencer) gets upset about a brand. Even if the criticism is small, with a strong community, a single opinion so quickly develops into many of the same (negative) opinions. Reacting early, sometimes doing nothing, sometimes moderating, sometimes actively acting, is one of the tasks.

Social Media Ads

Now we come to the core with the next two tasks: Reach! All companies want one thing above all else, awareness and attention. The more people know a brand, the higher the probability that they will fall back on it, whether in the supermarket or in the online store.

Reach can be built up laboriously over months and years, e.g. through good and creative content, which, however, must come anew every day! That is a lot of effort and work. It’s much easier with advertising. Facebook has well over 2 billion users, Instagram has well over 2 billion users, whether old or young, all can be reached relatively quickly by playing ads.

Accordingly, social media agencies take care of campaign planning, implementation, but also the subsequent analysis and optimization of advertisements.

The great advantage of advertising on social media are the data treasures of the social networks. For example, ads can be played out based on interests, the place of residence, the age of users. The more precise the information, the more specific the target group, the more precise an ad can be.

Example: a fashion brand advertises Black Friday and shopping events in individual cities. Berlin users get a picture with Alexanderplatz and the TV tower. Hamburgers get a photo of their city center, as do Cologneers, Düsseldorfers and Munichers. People naturally feel more attracted to a picture of their city than to a general picture.

This is how social media advertising works.

Influencer Marketing

The second important tool for building reach for a brand is influencer marketing. Here, social media agencies try to buy targeted placement with influencers. For example, as an Instagram Story or YouTube explainer video. In this way, agencies use the reach (community) of the influencer for customers.

Of course, individual areas of responsibility can also be combined! For example, you could use the content of the influencer and thus place social media advertising to people who follow the influencer. Because usually only 10 to 20% of the followers see the content. The posting usually passes everyone else by. Through the additional paid reach, you can also reach the last 80 to 90%.

This is what makes social media marketing with all its facets, from community building and management to advertising and influencer marketing, so interesting for companies.

Analyses and regular reporting

Lastly, content is not only planned and published by social media agencies, of course it is also analyzed and evaluated afterwards. What worked? What didn’t? From these findings, the social media strategy can be adapted and optimized.

Implementation: From plan to campaign

Successful implementation – An influencer campaign is usually created in several steps. First, the relevant influencers who fit the brand and target group are researched and selected. Then, negotiations are conducted with the influencers to clarify the terms of the collaboration.

Local or national: strategy

Procedure: What is the casting process?

The casting process is uncomplicated and relaxed. You first introduce yourself briefly so that we can get to know you. Then you will be asked a few questions to learn more about your personality and motivation as a model. Then comes the exciting part of the casting: we take some photos of you internally to test your expressiveness in front of the camera. You will also be asked to perform a short catwalk, which will be recorded on video.

What does a model agency do? A typical day in a model agency is varied and requires a lot of organization and communication! You must love your job if you are a model manager:in. As always, if you enjoy your job, it doesn’t feel like work! If you’ve ever wondered what happens in a model agency, what tasks are involved, here’s a little insight! Bookings, castings, projects from 7 AM to 9 PM.

7:00 – Start of the day

For me (Stephan, owner), the day starts at 7 a.m., often at Starbucks or in the sun on a park bench, very easy. In the morning I’m still alone, so I can focus on planning all the teams and projects for the day and the rest of the week.

8:00 – Start for the model agency team

The team in the agency then starts at 8 o’clock! The first step is to check the email inbox and sort through the messages received from customers. This involves prioritizing customer inquiries, new jobs and ongoing projects according to deadline, location, budget & co. The most urgent matters are handled first.

9:00 – Team meeting for the day

At 9 am there is often a short team meeting to discuss the day. Topics such as new applications from potential models (New Faces), upcoming castings and projects, current whereabouts of the models (especially if they are working internationally, e.g. in Milan, Paris or Seoul for 60 days), jobs in the field of user-generated content and influencer marketing, and general back-office work such as invoicing are discussed.

10:00 – Castings and model bookings

Booking begins at 10 a.m. and often runs at a rapid pace until the lunch break. New job requests are sifted through, prioritized and processed. This means that models are selected, briefings are created and proposals are sent to clients. Sometimes small e-castings are also conducted, where models record videos and introduce themselves. In an international context, job requests from partner agencies in Paris, London and other cities may also come in for models who are additionally placed abroad.

12:30 – Model applications, scouting

Before the lunch break, you sift through the applications, which are often received in large numbers (usually around 100 per day). For each model you take about 10 seconds, check face, height, age, place of residence, other pictures. Out of 100, 2 are usually interesting and you start talking. At the end of the month maybe 3, 4 new contracts are signed. Why “only” 3, 4 new model contracts? We want to know our models, as management. We don’t want to be a model index with hundreds of faces, but a model management that knows you and brings you forward individually – precisely because we know you well.

14:00 – Castings and model bookings #2

After the lunch break, a flood of responses begins to flow in at 2pm. These are feedbacks from models, regular clients, new clients and international partner agencies. In addition, editorial work is now falling into place, such as test shoots with photographers interested in the agency’s New Faces. The agency also proactively approaches photographers when there is a particularly promising New Face. In addition, content creator marketing and influencer marketing are also playing an increasingly important role.

15:00 – International: Paris, Milan, London & Co.

For the agency’s international bookers, cooperation with other agencies is also on the agenda. New Faces are presented to them and vice versa the agency presents its own New Faces. About 40% of the agency’s models are not from Germany, but from cities like London, Paris, Milan and Amsterdam. Here, the difference between an international model management and a national agency becomes clear: The work is done very personally and globally, all the way to New York and Tokyo, to advance the careers of the models, content creators and influencers.

Every 6 months we also invite to the larger model casting in our agency, away from the individual appointments. Here is a little insight:

15:00 – Applications: In between Gosee, models in the agency

Gosee appointments also take place at the agency, where models audition, often accompanied by their parents. The job is explained to them, casting and collaboration are discussed, and what happens if they are successful internationally is explained. Either via video call or live at the agency.

17:00 – Last Calls

Around 5 p.m., the team slowly calls it a day.

18:00 – The Bigger Pitcture

I then go back to the café and continue working on the Big Picture, the big whole
